Can I get any of the department store credit cards with bad credit?

If you have a bad credit history and you want to get a department store credit card, you may be able to get one; it really depends on the store and their requirements. Some department stores will offer credit to anyone, while others will not issue a card if you have a low credit score.

If a store does choose to issue a credit card to a person with bad credit, it may have high interest and a low credit limit. If you are attempting to clean up your credit and raise your credit score, it will be important to make your payments on time and stay within your credit limit. You will also want to choose a card that reports monthly to your credit file so that your potential creditors can see that you are making on time payments each month.

If you are dealing with a store that honors the major credit cards, you may want to consider a secured credit card. When you choose a secured card, you will be asked to make a payment for the amount of your credit card limit. Different cards may have different limits, but if, for instance, you choose to have a $200 dollar credit limit, you will be required to pay the $200 dollars when you establish the account. The money is then put into an account that will secure your credit card limit. The secured cards report the information to your credit file so you can work on raising your credit score. And some of them even offer reward points.

You could also choose to use a prepaid debit card. With this card, you determine how much of a payment you want to make to load this card. For instance, if you pay $300 dollars, then your card will be worth $300 dollars. Different card companies may set minimum and maximum amounts for loading the card. These cards generally do not report your information to your credit file, but some of the cards do offer to help build your credit. A checking account is not required for all of the cards. You can use these credit cards anywhere you could use a regular credit card and there is nothing on the card that will distinguish it from a regular account. The only real difference is the type of terms you have chooses to secure your credit card.

So now you know that there are many credit card options available for you even if you have bad credit, especially when working to acquire a store card. Even if you are not able to acquire the store card, you can try other types of cards to help you build your credit.
