When does a credit check usually get performed on me?

You might be surprised at the many instances in which a credit check needs to be performed on you. It is fair to think of your credit report as your pass to life. It is rather hard to move ahead in the financial sense without a good credit rating. Not only is it hard to move ahead in the financial sense, but it is also difficult to move ahead in life.

You already know that your credit is checked when you want to acquire new credit. If you're applying for a personal loan, a car loan, or a home loan, your credit is going to be checked. It will also be looked at if you are applying for a mobile phone. This is to ensure that you will pay your bill on time each month. These creditors are extending credit to you because they believe you will pay them on time.

Another reason why your credit may be checked is when getting a job. An employer may want to see how reliable you are. Although you may be a reliable person, they are looking at you on paper. They want to see how good you are with money, especially if you are going to be handling money. You would be quite surprised how many employers are now looking at credit reports to determine whether or not to hire someone.

Landlords are even taking a look. This is because they want to determine whether or not a person is going to pay their rent on time. They also look to see if any other landlords have reported unpaid rent. How a landlord uses a credit report is up to them. They may decide to rent to an individual if they do not have data from another landlord on their report. Then again, they may decide to not rent to them for the simple fact that their credit is bad.

These are the main things in which your credit report will be used. Creditors, such as those providing you with credit offers, cannot see your entire report, so you don't have to worry too much about them. Just make sure that no one is checking your entire report unless you give them permission to. This is usually done by signing a consent form of some sort. Whether it is a landlord or an employer, you have to give them permission.

So if you are in a situation in which your credit is not favourable, you need to do some work on it by paying down some of your debt, making payments on time, and disputing anything that you feel is not correct on your report. If you have a dispute, simply contact the creditor that the account belongs to in order to get it taken care of. Just by doing these few things, you can make a significant difference in the overall appearance of your report and your credit rating. This will make getting a job, finding a place to rent, and acquiring new credit a lot easier.
