How late can a payment be to a phone or finance company before they will put a mark on my credit file?
Delinquent payments can take a toll on your credit file. When a credit provider looks at your credit file and they see that there have been late payments, they may have difficulty deciding whether or not to extend you credit. It depends on their rules and it also depends on how many accounts on your credit file are showing late payments.
As for how late a payment can be to a phone or finance company before they put a mark on your credit file, it depends on them. They can place a mark on your file in 30 days if they wish. However, there is a standard when it comes to delinquent payments. For example, an account is considered overdue if the amount owed is over $100 and the account is over 60 days past due.
There is also a chance that a payment default may not be listed until the credit provider has taken steps to recover their debt. They may try to recover the entire debt or just part of it. In their recovery process, they have to contact you in writing or in person at your last known address to let you know that you must pay the outstanding amount. They may also tell you that failure to do so will result in the late payment being reported on your credit file.
After you bring the account current, the credit provider is obligated by law to make a change to your credit file that shows you have paid the account in full or brought it current. However, you will find that defaulted payments remain on your credit file for a period of 5 years. The only way the defaulted payment history will not remain on your credit file is if an investigation is conducted and it is shown that the defaulted payments were listed in error.
If you have a dispute, you must contact the credit provider first. If they are unable to resolve the issue, you can contact Veda Advantage in writing at Veda Advantage – Customer Relations P.O. Box 964, North Sydney, NSW 2059. In your letter, you must state the debt that you are disputing. You can also submit a complaint via email at customerrelations.au@vedaadvantage.com. The complaint will be acknowledged within 5 business days of receipt.
So know that you must review the policy of your credit provider in order to determine when your late payment will be reported to your credit file. If it is reported in error, you now know how you can go about disputing that data.
