Are there easy ways for me to get debt relief even if I have a really bad credit rating?

A poor credit rating can be problematic in many ways. If you are having difficulties with your financial situation, you may feel as if there is no way to change your status for the better. The reality, though, is that there are strategies to help you obtain debt relief despite your credit.

Be realistic about your situation.

Denial will make your situation worse. Acknowledge your financial situation and work on ways to remain current with your payments. If you can, pay more than the minimum payment each month; if that is not possible, make every effort to pay at least the minimum. Sometimes, though, even the minimum payment is too much. If your situation prevents you from making the minimum payment, ignoring the situation or denying its severity will not help you. If you cannot make the minimum payment, communicate with your creditors. Sometimes your commitment to paying the debt – even if you cannot do so at the moment – will deter the creditor from taking increasingly aggressive debt recovery measures.

Honor your agreements.

Remember, though: if you make payment arrangements or enter into some sort of agreement with a creditor, it is essential to follow through. For example, if you make an arrangement to pay $50 by the 15th of every month, pay it. If you agree that you will begin making monthly payments in February, begin making the payments. If you fail to do so, you will lose credibility with your creditor. Your failure to honor your word may also motivate the creditor to become more aggressive in attempts to recover the outstanding debt.

Work with a responsible third party.

You owe a debt. The creditor wants to collect it. You are having difficulty repaying the debt, for one reason or another. You may find that a third party can be helpful to you in this situation; an agency or organization that offers counseling to people with bad credit may be extremely valuable to you. A credit counseling advocate might be able to assist you with various matters, such as prioritizing your debts, setting up a payment schedule, and so on. In some cases, these third party organizations can contact the creditor on your behalf. It is important, though, to ensure that such an organization or agency is responsible and reliable before you begin working with them.

Find out if debt consolidation is a possibility for you
Debt consolidation loans provide a way for you to pay off your debt – and then simply repay that one loan. Although you will still have to repay the debt, you may find that the terms work better for you. In addition, you will be freed from the obligation of working with multiple creditors with different deadlines and varying policies that may contribute to your financial headache.

Monitor your credit report
Finally, make sure you know what is on your credit report. Check it regularly and address any discrepancies; if you seek a debt consolidation loan or otherwise seek ways to address your debt, it will be checked.

Do not give up. Continue to follow positive strategies; you will gradually improve your credit rating and begin to pull yourself out of debt.
