How do I know how much I can borrow?

The amount of money you can borrow from a credit lender will be determined by several different factors. If you are attempting to borrow money for a car or a home, the worth of the property and how much you need to borrow will be taken into consideration. Your annual income will also be taken into account as well as your monthly expenses. Your credit history will also determine how credit worthy you are.

Credit providers determine your credit score based on the information in your credit file. If you have been late making your payments, defaulted on a loan, or perhaps filed for bankruptcy, the information will be on your credit file. If the property is worth more than you want to borrow and, if you have enough income to be considered a good risk, you still may get the loan but it is entirely in the hands of the lender. While the information in your credit file may not keep you from being able to get a loan for a car or a home, it may determine how much interest you will be required to pay. The worse your credit history is, the higher the interest will be and if you need the loan there is nothing you can really do but pay the higher rate.

If you are in a position to wait a bit longer to get your loan, you may want to consider attempting to clean up the information in your credit file. Good payment history is not noted in your credit file, but if you can reduce the negatives, it will certainly help you. By making your payments on time and taking care that your accounts are current or paid in full, you will keep from adding more negative information. However, keep in mind that some negative information can haunt you for years. For instance overdue accounts, credit applications, inquiries, defaulted accounts, and court judgements stay on your credit file for five years. And bankruptcy information will stay in your credit file for seven years. Credit providers update your credit file whenever necessary with your account information. They will even update your address if necessary.

It is always beneficial to obtain a copy of your credit file so that you can verify the information it contains. If you find errors, you will need to dispute the information. Keep in mind that you may need to provide any necessary documentation to support your claim. If it is a simple error, it will be corrected within five days and you will receive a corrected copy of your credit file. If more verification is needed, it will take thirty days for the matter to be resolved. Should the information you are disputing involve late or missing payments, you will need to contact the credit provider to advise them of the error and request that they contact Veda Advantage to correct your credit file at www.mycreditfile.com.au. If you find information that suggests you may be a victim of fraud, you will need to contact law enforcement and your credit providers because otherwise, you may be liable for any incurred debt.
