How much does bad credit affect the amount I can borrow?
Having a history of bad credit is never helpful. However, if you are borrowing money for a car or for a home or for land, and the property is worth as much or more than you need to borrow, you still may be able to get the loan. You will need to provide information showing that you will be able to repay your loan. There are some department stores that will issue you a credit card regardless of your bad credit history.
Each credit provider has their own method of scoring to determine whether or not they will issue credit.
If a credit provider decides to take a risk and lend you the amount of money you need, you may find that the rate of interest is quite a bit higher than a person with good credit would have to pay. Credit lenders are in business to make money and, if you are a bad risk, they need to be assured that they will be able to get as much of their money as possible if you choose to default on the loan. Avoid taking on any new payments if you feel that you may have a problem repaying the loan.
If it turns out that you cannot make the payments or have to default, you will just be making a bad situation worse. Defaults and late payments stay on your credit file for five years, so they will affect your ability to get credit for quite a while.
If you can avoid taking on a new loan, be sure that you are making any payments on your existing accounts on time. Keep your accounts current and be sure that you pay them in full; this will keep your credit providers from adding more negative information to your credit file. If you just cannot wait any longer for that new car, you will probably be paying the higher interest, but you can use this loan to begin to repair your credit information. Just be sure that you stay current on the payments and if at all possible, pay the loan off early if there are no penalties.
Get a copy of your credit file. Be sure that all of the information is correct. While it does not happen every day, errors are sometimes made. Just be sure that your credit record is correct. It could affect the rate of interest you are required to pay, and who would not like to save money? If you find an error, be sure that you get it corrected as soon as possible. Be prepared to submit any documents you have that can help to support your claim. If the error concerns a missing payment or a late payment you will need to contact your credit provider to dispute the information and do not forget to request that they also contact Veda Advantage to correct your credit file.
Be sure to periodically check your credit file for fraud attempts. Credit fraud can ruin you finances quickly and leave you vulnerable to debts you did not create.
