Can I get unsecured loans if I have bad credit?
When you have bad credit, there are consequences that you have to face. If you would default on the loan, your collateral is taken out of your possession in order to satisfy the loan.
An unsecured loan is not like this at all. It does not require collateral. In other words, the lender is taking your word for it when you say that you are going to pay back the loan. When you have bad credit, your credit report does not prove that you will pay back the loan. This means the lender is taking a risk on you. Some may feel that the risk is so high that they do not award the loan. It depends on if your credit file reflects an effort on your part to fix your credit. You can’t have any recent late payments.
If you do have recent late payments, it is in your best interest to work on bringing all of your accounts current. This is so you can try for your unsecured loan later and get approved. You may want to ask your financial institution how long they require you to have on time payments before they will award an unsecured loan or simply consider it. This will give you an idea of when you can try again.
All-in-all, the odds of getting an unsecured loan with bad credit are not great. However, it is not hopeless. Just make sure you are mindful of interest rates if you find that you can get a loan. This may mean that you will have to comparison shop a little so that you don’t spend hundreds or thousands more in interest than you have to.
